about

i. tapestries (cello + tape)
ii. in landscape (cello + double bass)
iii. hesperus (solo double bass)

a set of sound works that explore resonance and vibration inspired by the vast expanse of the Australian landscape.

tapestries, cello + tape
Freya Schack-Arnott’s 'Tapestries', for cello and playback, explores the interplay of harmonic-based motives within a specific scordatura, as they bend, shift and expand in a stream of quarter-tonal cellos. Inspired by the bird’s eye view of shifting landscapes and paddocks seen in shades of greens, browns and reds; Freya has used fragmented recordings of cello loops to weave together a track which the live cello mimics or echoes and ultimately is liberated from through improvisation.

in landscape, cello + double bass

Cyclical in structure, the duo work explores the incredible range of both the cello and the double bass. This piece is a culmination of the individual research both players have invested in their practice regarding tuning and altered scales. With 8 strings as a possible comprehensive sound object, Freya + Ben dedicated their investigation towards tunings that would create the most tension. The intimacy of their combined scordatura results in psycho-acoustic phenomena where upper partials clash resulting in a shimmering energy.

hesperus, solo double bass

Ben: “Hesperus is the evening ‘star’; the planet venus. This piece developed during a journey to the outback and beyond in 2018 in which I would often watch venus set on the horizon. Hesperus is inspired by those grand horizons of central Australia, that beautifully rugged terrain, and the broad spectrum of light experienced at dawn and dusk. Specifically, the instrument is tuned around the harmonic spectrum w D as the fundamental pitch. Hesperus revolves around this fundamental pitch whilst the tuning of the top string of the instrument gradually changes. It moves from a dissonant resonance of close upper partials to the eventual release of (almost) sympathetic strings."
